Finnish People and racism

Hello,

Your information on study in Finland has been joy to study as well as very useful in the same time. You have been providing information about the entrance, survival tactics, job opportunity, and other things. But I would like to drag in the matter of Finnish people and their behavior. I mean how do they treat the foreign elements landing on their land. Are Nepalese people sufferers of anti-racism or any kind of mis-behavior only due to their color of skin? I mean do these things exist predominantly or only on exceptional cases not to be concerned of?

I just wanted to know what kind of reception we all(Nepalese students) can expect to receive if we are lucky enough to come there in our near future.

I have searched in different sites and found Finland to be one of the most safest and with low rate of crime in comparison to other countries. But I wanted to clarify that from you as you are studying there.

I am really happy to know that you are being aware about the Finnish Education, culture and related stuffs. I really appreciate your concern about the people's behavior in Finland. I am really glad to share my experiences about their treatment towards Nepalese.

In summary, I would say, Finnish people are the best people of the world. They are so quiet, peaceful and non-violent. They are the real Gandi-badi people when you say, "ready to accept slap on other cheek if you slap on one". They are so creamy and good people with superior civilization and culture. I believe, we Nepalese are very much violent than these Finnish people when you talk about their decency.

Finnish people have two best friends, Sauna and Beer. One of my Japanese friend says, these Finnish drink more beers than water. I think, he is absolutely right. And, Sauna bath is another essential factor on their life. There are 1.7 Millions Sauna places while the total population of Finland is just 5.6 Millions.  There won't be any house without sauna and there won't be any Finnish inside sauna without beer in his/her hand. Finnish people get wild after drinking beer but they won't be violent and they won't harm anyone even after drinking.

It is really true fact that Finland is the safest place of the world. You will be so assured about you, your security and such issues once you get adopted with the Finnish system. There is no chances of theft of stuffs, no threats, no chances of harm, no road accidents, no crime, no bloodshed and no noises and loud voices. One of my friend told it dead-land as well since we Nepalese are so habitual with noises and such stuffs while these Finnish get surprises when we make some loud voices. Everyone is peaceful and so quiet. Everyone respects the human rights of other people and respect the individuality of each other.

But, you should remember, here are International people as well who come here carrying their culture along with them. So, being alert is really a good idea to avoid any of the forthcoming accident. But, there are very less number of international people; so these international people are also influenced with the Finnish system and become peaceful on most of the cases.

About racism, I am still on doubt. I can't say whether these people are racist or not. Naturally, Europeans are slight racist towards South Asians. I would say, these Finnish people are silently racist, it means, they don't show their biasness towards us and treat us like they are treating us good, but they are biased when it comes about implementation. Let's take an example of job issues: if there is a opening for job where English speaking is only the criteria of selection and there is one Finnish applicant, then your chances of getting job will drastically drops down though your English skills might be far better than that Finnish Applicant. They might say, they don't make any discrimination depending on any kind of factors but it happens sometimes. Similarly, the teacher will be teaching in a classroom filling with majority of International Students and one Finnish students asks a question in Finnish language, then the teacher gladly answers in Finnish language and don't care what these International Students might be thinking about. It is natural that Finnish people should get advantage in Finland since its their homeland and it is the place where they will struggle and contribute for their nation. But, it does not mean that you are welcoming International Students as guest and making them feel humiliation by your act. For example, you are giving an interview for a Programming post which says, you should be fluent in some programming language and you did very good during the interview. Later, you got a mail stating "We can't accept you for this position since you don't have Finnish language skills". The funny thing is that the company website of that company states they operate in English and have English as the medium of communication inside the office. Even, the job description says, should be good in English and no Finnish Language needed. Another example, when you go for searching some cleaning job like Dish washing in restaurant, he/she will ask you every possible question and could not find any further one question, he/she will ask how much fluent are you in Finnish Language? Understand that he/she could not say NO to you so asking this question, so, answering negative means, he/she will say, "We can't take you since you have Finnish language". Only these Finnish people can understand why they need Finnish language to wash dishes. If you say, you are fluent and show your fluency in front of them and if they don't want to take you, they will say, "We don't have any vacancy now and we will call you later when there will be any vacant place" though you went there after seeing a vacancy on a newspaper this morning only. You reached there on exact nine O'clock and notify them and you came here only after seeing the vacancy so there must be that position vacant till yet since you reached there on first minute of first hour of office opening. But if they need not to take you, they will say, we just confirmed one this morning. This funny logic really works that they took one when the office was not opened. Unfortunately, immediately after you, a Finnish one walks in and happily comes out by getting that job for which you were passed through such a long drama of "Finnish Language", "Position not available", "Position already reserved". I don't know whether these Finnish people don't want to say directly NO or any other reason of biasness, but they are not kind enough towards South Asian.

Being specific to the treatment about Nepalese, they are really so kind to Nepalese. They treat us good than other South Asian citizens. They believe us and really feel us honest rather than other South Asian. The above paragraph is the iron gate that every Nepalese need to pass through and once you pass through it, these Finnish people treat us are the dearest one than all of the other South Asian people.

  2. " There is no chances of theft of stuffs, no threats, no chances of harm, no road accidents, no crime, no bloodshed and no noises and loud voices."

I am a Finn and I say this is total crap. We have all these things. Maybe not this kind of thing that happens everyday, but if you happen to be in the wrong place in the wrong time, yes it happens.

Things get stolen... but like in school there is clothes racks where kids leave their outside clothes. If this is something exotic to you then you may think why the Finnish people do not "trust" the foreigners if this is not "normal thing"?

Road accidents happen but we do not have a million mopeds and animals on the road. And Finns have quite high homicide rates too - only it is mostly people who know each other and are very drunk and somebody wakes up dead.

So yes and no, but stating that is untruth. And Finns want truth.

  3. I am finnish and i really think that our country is very very safe. :) hey thanks for those nice comments about finland, it made me feel proud of myself. I am use to that everyone are saying something bad about finland

  4. well am amazed how you finnish people hurry answering how safe this country to you and how your enjoying your life while your making misserable stay for your guests, the foreigns, for attacking them daily using racist slurs assaulting, not giving them jobs overall it's horrible horrible to be colored foreign and to live in finland, i think nazism is still is alive in finland. you wo'd think when come to finland hitler still lives and still operating from finland.

  5. Finns need some real education. Most Finns cannot think critically, and most cannot think for themselves. All they can do is rote learn the views of their teacher, which are then regurgitated for an exam.

Racism does exist in all countries. However, in Finland the problem is very severe. The Finnish state is institutionally racist. Ever heard of a foreigner working for KELA, Vero, or just the local council collecting rubbish?

My advice to the relatively few foreigners living here is go home, or move to a modern civilised country such as Sweden, Germany, UK etc etc. The Finns will not change. They beleive that they are a superior race. They see foreigners as being sub-human.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I don`t agree with you. I know many finnish people are racist, but we totally dont think foreigners are subhumans. Where did you even get that. And many of us treat foreigners nicely. It`s offensive to hear that we cant change, but how`d you know.
Moreover in finland you can live without a job, you have free education, cheap and good health care etc. I know its hard to get a job here if you aren`t finn. But atleast we do treat exchange studets better than you think(well not everyone). And never generalise its not fair because I like people from other countries. My best friend is from Thailand.
And everyone STOP saying that we are like Hitler. When we started cooperating with him, we didnt have many choses. We were losing war against Russia and we asked help from England and USA but didnt get any. Only one who was willing to help us was Germany. And i dont think any of us are proud of that. Moreover it was like 60 years ago so leave it alredy. Its not our fault or Germanys.

  7. I am a foreigner living in Finland and I totally agree that Finland is a very racist country, I also feel as if Hitler was still alive in Finland.

The problem with finns is that,

    1. they are not intelligent
    2. they are not creative
    3. they are incredibly jealous because physically and mentally they are let s say challenged

Never marry a finn or mix blood with her, people in Finland are either studying or working, very few make the big mistake of marrying a native. Forget about Finland if you want to be happy, we should treat them accordingly in our countries.

  8. I had no idea that Finland was that racist. I knew it was not as tolerant as the UK or USA, but I'm surprised that the racism there is so severe. It's a pity, because in many other ways, it is a very progressive country. I disagree with those who said it can never change. Never give up hope, Finland may change some day.

  9. I found the blog by an accident but stopped to read it. The conversation under this text is rather weird. You talk about people in a nation as they were all the same. All Finns are racists, all Finns are this and that. It doesn't really go to the Finnish way of thinking that you could seriously stereotype people like this. There are racists in this country as there are in all countries. But you can never lable a whole country as a racist one. Some of the situations mentioned in the blog might also just be cultural misunderstandings not acts of racism.

What comes to the writer who claimed the three points. You must be very bitter or suffering from the same things as on your opinion Finns are. You are as well talking about all the people off this country as one. This I find really weird.

To start to understand this culture and people in the country my suggestion is for you to start seing individuals, not masses.

    All the best!

  11. There is dangers in Finland like any other country, Finns dont do any differens with crimes. I would say that we do the homicides differently, like we dont have much serial killers in here like in U.S.A or in Russia, but the possibility of spree killing (school shootings, rage kills) have increased.

  12. Question #1: Are *all* Finnish people racist?
    Anwer: No

Question #2: Are *majority* of Finnish people racist?
    Answer: Yes

I don't know where you get that "honest quiet & nice Finnish people" or "Finland is the safest place in world" anymore ?

It *was* that way, from 1970 to late 1990, but your data is now seriously out-dated.

The modern Finnish people and Finland have ... changed ... and not for the best.

And yes, Im a 33-years old Finnish man and know what Im talking about.

My generation and earlier ones have lesser "racist tendensies" than the younger ones, which is strange.

    It should be backwards.

Or maybe my generation and earlier ones have allways been (and probably will always be) a little racist but it has all been hidden, below surface of the smiling face.

You see, in history, Finnish people have been under the rule of foreign invaders.

    Twice.

First under our western neightbor, Sweden, between 1300 - 1809.

And then, a second time under our eastern neightbor, Russia, between 1809 - 1917.

Finland gained it's independence 6 of December 1917.

So I believe that many old and young Finns here (who are massively unemployed right now and makes the situation even worse...) will see any foreigner in Finland as an .........
    .........
    .........

    Invader.

    Besides:

    1) Finns have fourth most firearms in the world per capita

    2) Finns, like allready mentioned before, drink a lot. Especially in weekends.

    3) Finland *was* ranked as highest number of suicides.

    4) We are introvert, shy, silent, mean, bad mannered and narsist.

    5) Most of the year it's cold and dark here.

    So, yeah.
I don't blame any of you foreigners if Finns seem a bit racist :)

Sometimes I really wonder what the heck *Im* doing right here when I could be living in like, say, Spain or Brazil ....

  13. I just saw this post by accident while i was researching about Finland, it sounded like such a nice place with intelligent people, good government, and not a lot of corruption. But racism is not tolerable. I live in Vancouver, BC, CANADA, and we are very tolerable with different races. So it is unimaginable that there is this kind of behavior happening in Finland. It's too bad. The majority of people in Canada are very tolerable of different races. I HOPE YOU ALL ARE MORE OPEN MINDED IN FINLAND. I wish to retire there some day :) Sounds like a great place, honestly, besides the majority of slightly racist people there.

All the best from Vancouver, Canada

  14. Yes and no, finns appear racist to foreigners. But i read once, that once you have earned the thrust of a finn it stays and yes all countries have their "loud mouthed" little hitlers. The only problem is that here these "bullies" come to show in just about the only place finns socialice aka the bar... and of course there it will emmediately look like the whole damn bar is filled with racists mainly because the other finns will not interviene in any hostile envirement if it isn't absolutety necesseary... Finns arn't rasists they just have a rediculously high national pride and show it in all the wrong ways...

Btw i am myself a finn so i appologize for the bad spelling...

  15. So sad to read as native finnish man that someone thinks finnish people are racist.

There's not more racism in finland than in any other country. Just come here and see that.. I have lot of black friends and I treat every person as the same way as I treat my family member even though person is black, islam, latin and so on... And I'm used to that someone thinks that EVERY finnish drinks beer and a lot... You all are welcome to come here and I give my word that you can find a lot of finnish people who are quite nice and non-racist. You just need to get to know us well then you can see perfectly which kind of people we are. The more, the better cause we finnish are quite close for the first time you see us.( not all but some)

BTW I AM MYSELF A FINN AND I DON'T APOLOGIZE FOR THE BAD SPELLING cause english is not my mother language...

and btw I don't drink alcohol at all.

  17. Just leave us Finnish alone. We're not interested in other races, and we don't want to have anything forced on us...we've had enuogh of that over the centuries. We're just proud of who we are. Why is solitude such a crime in the 21st century?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Give me a break...

Blah come on, every country has their little Hitlers and so on. Individuals hello! No need to be so bitter and all... What's the point anyway.
There are those who most deffinetly are abso racists and those who accept all. There are 5 million people (give or take) in Finland and it's so funny that now all are this and that (I mean why do you speak instead of finns. Who are you to judge them?). Have you met those 5 million people (give or take) 'cos I don't think you have. Oh and please don't start with the "because over half is this and that" then it's premitted to say ALL are?? Nope.. Not on my accord.
I think if you move/visit different country you need to respect THEIR culture and THEIR laws (Well okay maybe you still need to use your brain and check if it really is right to do this and that EVEN if it's premitted)
But everybody should remember this NOBODY.IS.PERFECT.
Okay maybe I don't make any sense at all but...

  19. i this all are making a mess here... there is a saying *phool ko aankha ma phool nai sansar* ie flower in the eye of a flower...same is the case.. the problem is our thinking not the Finn. They are helpful and kind. I have got a new life and new way to think since I have landed in this country. Let Finland live and progress. Let it be better day by day. My only wish... and people are not racist but our thinking about Finn is racist. No Finn is racist.

  24. I'm a Hindu by religion and a citizen of India and a fluent speaker of 4 different languages. I have a lot of Finnish friends and I can conclude that Finland is not a racist country, infact, no country in this world is a racist country. But since Finland is experiencing a large wave of foreign population, it's quite natural to seek and have a feeling of protection towards their culture, language and religion. But this kind of feeling is often misunderstood and in most cases misinterpreted as racism.
Before complaining about Finns being racist, I would like all of you to ask yourself "What would you do if someone comes to your country and complains about your national pride, wants to replace your language with their's, wants you to listen to them and if you don't, tries to represent you with the title of racist?"
Yes we are humans, and we are equal in all aspects. But this doesn't necessarily mean I think the same way any other person will do. And yeah, this ain't an exception cause we should try alteast. We should better find a true reason for this debate rather
    than cracking some stupid jokes.

  25. I am Vietnamese-American and I have been to Finland three times in my life. Every time was a rather pleseant experience, bt I can only say this because I was staying there with Finnish friends.

Every country on this planet has some degree of racism and discrimination (EVEN GOOD OL' AMERICA) so I would not go as far as saying Finnish people in their entirety are racist (that's a bit extreme, yes?).

    ReplyDelete
  26. Well! From all the comments I have read so far, not just on this website but other websites similar to this one. The unfortunate big conclusion is, most finnish people are racist on way or the other. I have a finnish friend who has on several occasion made some indirect racist comments about black people, but who claim to prefer black women than white women. Ironique is it not? I personnally think that all white people are racist one way or the other, it can either be concsious or subconcsious. It is the whites who started to slave the blacks in the first place. That's the reason why some black people don't like the whites at all....But then again who can blame them after all the non stop suffering the whites have put them through. And now on the 21st centurery, things have not really changed don't they? Or have they really or is it just a disguise?

  27. I am a foreigner too and I am from Bangladesh. But I cant tell a lie that finish are racist. At least I didnt see this, more over I see people are very helpful mind. We cant judge a nation by few people activities. Usually in our country when we see a foreigner how many people we talk to him/her willingly unless they talk. It is true that finns dont talk much or dont usually talk to you from their willingness, its not a fault , may be a traditional behavior. We people have to think positively. All over world racism is a crime, we all know that, even finns dont discuss about it, then why we are arguing about it. About Job it is natural that they will give priority towards their people. We should learn this culture...

At least I like finns and I see them very helpful.

  29. First, I am from Nepal. I am very thankful to one who wrote this blog about the real facet of the Finnish culture. It’s true that Finnish people love Nepalese, but also they are loved by other country national. It is not always the case for everybody; it depends upon how humble you are to others. I think when Nepalese citizen once come over here they are inspired by the Finnish people and they will be humble to others.

In my case, I love Finnish people and somehow down to earth nature, but I hate terrible snow fall, slippery way and - 35 degree temperature. Finnish people don't directly show the racism, but during job seeking process somewhere I felt they discrimination between the Finnish and international students because I have also faced such problem. I applied for the software development position (Ruby on Rails developer) where Finnish language was not the requirement. According to my view, I think there are not so many companies using this language. And then they interview me and gave me some assignment task to complete before hiring. They gave me 1 week deadline to do the task, but i completed the task within 2 days and submitted it to them. After that, they were happy about my assignment and they were about 90% sure for hiring and they were talking about my work permit (like how many hours can I work for them & will I be able to come to Helsinki or I can work remotely from home). I was happy on getting such feedback from them and they told me to wait for 1 week to make a decision. I waited first week and second week with the hope they will offer me a position. But after third week they mailed me by saying the sorry message. The below message is the mail they had send to me. Sorry, I don’t have rights to paste the exact message, but the message was somehow like that

"Sorry for the long delay.. ……………….., and …………………………..……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. that we need a developer with fluent Finnish language skills. I think that means that we cannot hire you for the position. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….………………….., I'm interested in discussing again."

By looking at this message I felt little sad, but after while I thought this is not only the company in Finland and kept on trying to get the position.

But the interesting fact was that after 2 days they again open the job vacancy announcement for the software development position. At that point, I was thoughtful "Whether they really needed the software developer who knows Finnish language". So, by looking at this situation, I am in dilemma whether they are socially racist or not. I think they were searching the Finnish citizen not the one who knows Finnish language because international students can also know the Finnish language.
